Fashion Outtakes from the Ellie Goulding SF Show

It’s always a fun challenge interviewing people about fashion who aren’t in the business of fashion. They tend to give you unexpected answers and a fresh take on how “non-industry” people think about (or don’t think about) trends and putting together their own special look. Somehow the interviews tend to be a little more raw and a little less predictable.

British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding was no exception. Sipping on a cup of tea when I arrived at her W Hotel suite, she seemed exhausted from touring, but  still managed to rally on the last night of her tour, give me some thoughtful  answers to my battery of style questions for the Chronicle, and later perform an electric set.

Swimsuit Season Has Arrived. Masala Bhangra … anyone?

It’s swimsuit season. I know this, even though it’s still erratically cold and rainy in SF, because every fashion and beauty email list I’m subscribed to reminds me on a daily basis that I need to shop for/fit into/agonize over my next swimwear purchase.

My Favorite Outfit: Fashion Grad Caitlin Smith

Caitlin Smith. Photographed on the roof of her NY apartment share by roommate and stylist Rayna Basta.

Caitlin Smith is one of those people who effortlessly oozes style. I knew this when she showed up at my office for an editorial internship at 7×7 a couple years ago, and mere moments after meeting her I knew that she had the gut fashion instinct needed for the job.

If you haven’t stumbled upon the new All Saints store in downtown San Francisco, you’re missing out. The UK retailer opened a gorgeous, two-story flagship in recent weeks, which I wrote about in the December issue of SFIS, on newsstands now.

Get Katy Perry’s Pinup Glam Look

You’d be hard-pressed to open up a magazine, turn on the radio, or switch on the TV, for that matter, without seeing or hearing about pop princess Katy Perry. The media darling is everywhere, including the San Francisco Chronicle, where I wrote a story about Perry’s vintage-inspired style and put together a more affordable look using her Moschino Cheap & Chic cherry-print dress as inspiration. Check out the Style story here on sfgate.com, and be sure to look out for more of my celeb fashion reports for the Chronicle on Lauren Conrad and Rachel Zoe this coming Sunday!

Outside Lands Fashion and Your Fall Trends Preview

Outside Lands may have come and gone, but the fashion trends I spotted at the two-day music and arts festival in San Francisco earlier this month remain. Carrying into fall are animal prints, mix-and-match patterns, and faux fur accents seen on fashionable festival-goers rocking out in Golden Gate Park, who came out in droves despite the late-August fog. Of course, it wouldn’t have been a true San Francisco scene without a healthy dose of hippy meets hipster–from feather hair accessories to arm socks–and the quintessential City Girl combination of a scarf, fedora, and boots.

Jumping on the Skinny Cargo Bandwagon–For Less

Courtesy of redcarpet-fashionawards.com

It’s highly likely that I jumped on the skinny cargo bandwagon because I’m working on a bunch of celebrity fashion trend stories for the Chronicle. (That’s my excuse, at least, for the growing stack of Tinsel Town rags that have piled up next to my bed.) After spotting J Brand’s $230 Houlihan skinnies on everyone from Rihanna to Gwen, I was determined to find a comparably cute pair that wouldn’t break the bank.

My Now Famous Purse in Rouge Magazine

I’m usually the one chasing after sources and asking the questions, so it came as an amusing surprise when I was approached six months ago at one of my favorite San Francisco cafes by a fellow fashion editor to be interviewed and photographed for an article.

Top Five Summer Fashion Trends

Courtesy of Glamour.com

Glamour magazine’s new Ask-a-Stylist iPhone application, which I mentioned in an earlier post , has officially launched and, so far, style questions have been pouring in from all over the world.

This weekend I got a query from a gal in the Netherlands asking for help finding the right color palette for her fair complexion. The wonders of technology!
